AMD Says Vega Not Before 2017

A leaked presentation meant for investors, AMD has stated that they expect to launch the “Vega” GPU architecture no sooner than 2017. AMD does plan to get Vega out within the first half of 2017. What is interesting about this presentation is that AMD is not planning on making larger GPUs on its existing “Polaris” architecture. So the biggest product will be the $249 Radeon RX 480.

This means that AMD does not plan to compete against NVIDIA on key price-points above the GeForce GTX 1070, GTX 1080, TITAN X Pascal, at least for the next five months.

In the meantime AMD could launch additional mobile SKUs based on Polaris 10 and Polaris 11 chips. This decision to not make larger chips based on the Polaris architecture and the slow Vega development could be because they are pulling resources to work on their semi-custom SoCs it’s working on for both Microsoft and Sony. Vega could also be running on schedule with the market availability of HBM2 memory.

2017 is going to be an interesting year for AMD, they will be launching Vega and its Zen CPU architecture.
